Situated in the middle of a historical railway junction, Kingland Shopping Centre of Dalston is surrounded by service yards of contesting retail activity. Closing off the gates to each other, these service yards become the backyard of the city disconnected with the rest. According to the existing masterplan, the area would be developed over twenty years period. Rather than waiting for the completion of fragmented development of each of the service yards, the project aims to make positive change to the site by using the existing building of the Shopping Centre and the service yards. The proposed development firstly open up three corners of the Shopping Centre to create new circulation of people, infrastructure and goods. In each of these corners, new public programmes would be inserted. Together they become the spine to sustain future development of the site.
