Given the brief to design an Assembly Workshop for the AA community, I strongly believe that in order to accommodate all that diversity of programs and individuals at the AA the building should be adaptable. Adaptable system made entirely of stiff elements with the tactile quality of a fabric. An occupiable scale allowed to experience an adaptable space. Being able to control our own space within communal engagement became a key driver towards designing an adaptable building.

Highly deployable internal and external spaces to adapt to environmental factors, access, different scales of operations and to modify views.Design brief for an assembly workshop was to provide a 500-square-metre canopy space.

With an experience of working outside in cold, only by making building adaptable 500-square-metre canopy as in brief can become 350 square-metres of enclosed space, which consolidates with being able to follow the original brief but also adding this extra ability to enclose space.

System of movable and fixed elements of the building explored through designing and making. The movable sections had to be reconfigured according to distribution of mass and lever position to allow movement with minimised external effort. The aim was to recreate a theatre of movement, for a person to engage and be the puppeteer.
The movable sections had to be reconfigured according to distribution of mass and lever position to allow movement with minimised external effort.
In summer the building extends to the yard and allows continuation from building to the yard; in winter during the coldest time it closes down.
